Dioctyl Phthalate (DOP) is a plasticizer used in the production of flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic.
Dioctyl Phthalate is one of the most widely used plasticizers in PVC due to its low cost. DOP is a general-purpose plasticizer and long-time industry standard known for its good stability to heat and ultraviolet light, and broad range of compatibility for use with PVC resins. Dioctyl Phthalate can also be used as dielectric and hydraulic fluids.

Application in areas:

  • Primary Plasticizer for PVC:
Most common use is in flexible PVC products, including:
    • Cables and wires
    • Flooring, wall coverings
    • Synthetic leather
    • Tubing, hoses, and seals
    • Plastic films and sheets
  • Rubber and Polymers
    • Used in nitrile rubber, chloroprene rubber, and other elastomers to improve flexibility and durability.
  • Paints and Coatings
    • Used to modify viscosity and enhance film-forming properties.
  • Adhesives and Sealants
    • Improves flexibility and tackiness in formulations

Safety & Handling:

  • Hazards:
    • Suspected to be reprotoxic (may harm fertility or unborn children)
    • Can cause environmental harm (persistent in soil and water)
    • Skin contact may cause irritation with prolonged exposure

Regulatory Restrictions:

  • Banned or restricted in toys and childcare articles in many countries (e.g., EU REACH, U.S. CPSIA)
  • Frequently being replaced by non-phthalate alternatives like DINCH, DOA, or DOTP

PPE Requirements:

  • Use gloves, safety goggles, and proper ventilation when handling

Storage Guidelines:

  • Store in tightly closed containers away from heat, sparks, and direct sunlight

Packaging: Drum
